Chiropractic care is centered on the role of the spine and central nervous system (CNS) in promoting good health and utilizing the natural power of the body to heal itself. Chiropractors focus on the relationship between the structure of the spine and CNS function, and importantly how the relationship affects a patient’s health.
Chiropractors are trained to identify the cause of health issues which are caused by misalignments of the vertebrae (small bones that form the spine). These misalignments often disrupt neurological communications between the brain and the rest of the body leading to health problems.
Chiropractors gently adjust the position of the vertebrae in the spine in order to correct misalignments, and reduce, or eliminate changes in the CNS allowing a patient’s body to adapt and heal itself effectively.
Chiropractic care can be traced as far back as 2700 B.C. as writings from China and ancient Greece mention spinal manipulation to ease lower back pain. Hippocrates, the Greek physician who lived from 460 B.C. to 357 B.C. also published texts discussing the importance of chiropractic care. He stated; “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases”.
The practice of spinal manipulation began to gain momentum in the United States late in the nineteenth century when in 1895 Daniel David Palmer founded the chiropractic profession in Iowa. Learn more about Daniel Palmer here. Since Palmers initial conception of chiropractic, doctors of chiropractic have continued to gain professional recognition in all fifty states. Chiropractic care is now respected all over the world and continued research throughout the twentieth century has produced very influential results which have molded the perception of chiropractic care to what it is today.
Today doctors of chiropractic are considered experts in the field of non-invasive care and are able to treat a variety of painful conditions.
